Vitamin D and Your Baby

What you need to know

Whether you choose to breastfeed or formula feed your baby you should give your baby 5 micrograms (5µg) of vitamin D3 every day, according to the HSE.

What is Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is important because it helps our bodies use calcium to build and maintain strong bones and teeth. Children (and adults) in Ireland have low levels of vitamin D which can lead to weak bones.   In severe cases low levels of vitamin D can cause rickets(1) in children. There has been an increase in the number of cases of rickets in Ireland in recent years.

Beyond Miscarriage

It was a perfect weekend and we were all in great form after having just told our then 8 year old daughter and 5 year old son that we were indeed expecting baby no 3. Everyone’s spirits were high, the world was a happy place.  I was 15 weeks along, so we were well past the scary mark, I thought.

When’s the best time to have a baby?

New statistics show that record numbers of women in their 40s are having babies. Over the last 20 years, the number of fortysomething women giving birth in England and Wales has almost trebled. Experts put this down to several factors: we are postponing childbearing because of our careers, our men don’t want to commit, or we are having a “prolonged adolescence” in our 30s and simply don’t get around to it.

Babies’ Language Starts In The Womb

Often the subject of comedy, many pregnant women talk to their unborn baby, sing nursery rhymes or play music to entertain or comfort the child in their womb. Now scientis have shown that this is actually an important step in language development and should be encouraged.Cultural studies often showed that the types of gurgles and babble that a newborn used seemed to be unique to specific parental language groups. French babies babble in a certain way that is different from, say, Chinese babies. Scientists wondered why this was happening.

Claudia Schiffer has posed naked for the cover of German Vogue while heavily pregnant.

The 39-year-old supermodel is just days away from giving birth to her third child and is pictured proudly showing off her baby bump in the picture taken by fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld.

Claudia said: “It was important to us to show how beautiful it is to be a woman and that you can have a positive attitude towards your body including when you’re expecting.”
